- Senior epidemiologist and parasitologist
Katja Polman is a senior epidemiologist and parasitologist. She is an associate professor at the VU University in Amsterdam, and head of the Section of Infectious Diseases. She also holds a position as professor within the Unit of Medical Helminthology at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium. She has a long track record of research and education in the field of neglected tropical diseases, more specifically on diagnosis, epidemiology, and integrated control of parasitic (co)infections and associated diseases (e.g. infectious diseases, allergy, malnutrition, chronic diseases). She has also been involved in various research capacity strengthening projects in DRCongo, Senegal, Mozambique, Cuba and Indonesia. Research activities within her Section are focused on the interactions between nutrition and infection and their impact on human health and disease. Several multidisciplinary projects are ongoing in close collaboration with partners in Latin-America, Africa and Asia.
