Dr. D. Essink  (FALW, Athena Institute) is a researcher and lecturer at the Athena Institute, VU University, Amsterdam. He holds a master's degree in health sciences with a specialization in International Public Health from the VU University, Amsterdam (cum laude). He obtained his PhD degree on the role of change agents in sustainable health system innovation. His current research focuses on system innovation in relation to healthcare, nutrition and food systems in Vietnam and Lao PDR with emphasis on end-user and stakeholder involvement and processes of scaling up niche level interventions. For the purpose of his studies Dirk has conducted research in amongst others Netherlands, Canada, Sudan, Ghana, South Africa, Georgia, Laos, India and Vietnam. Dirk Essink is member of the management team of the Amsterdam Centre for World Food Studies. In addition to his research activities he conducts several educational duties. Dirk is a master specialisation coordinator for International Public Health and develops, coordinates and teaches in several master courses. Currently he is involved in developing a minor in food and nutrition security. He is a co-promotor of several PhD candidates doing research in the Netherlands, Vietnam, Laos and Canada.
